Urdu poet Sikandar Ali Wajd's ghazal: Ab ke junoon mein chaak girebaan na ho saka....

Sikandar Ali 'Wajd', was a leading Urdu poet from Deccan region in Southern India. He hailed from Aurangabad in today's Maharashtra.

In pre-partition era, Aurangabad was part of the princely state of Hyderabad that was ruled by Nizam. Wajd was born in 1914. Wajd joined the civil service and later became a judge.

He was also member of Upper house of parliament. He passed away in 1983. A contemporary of Makhdoom Mohiuddin, he is often termed as 'Wajd' Hyderabadi. Read his ghazal:

[zindaa.n=prison, jail]

Now read the same ghazal in Roman English:

ab ke junuuN meN chaak girebaaN na ho sakaa
kuchh ehtemaam-e-jashn-e-bahaaraaN na ho sakaa

raah-e-daraaz-e-umr, asiirii meN kaT gayii
lekin dimaaGh aadii-e-zindaaN na ho sakaa

haq-beenii-e-nigaah ke qurbaaN jaaiye
khaashaak par gumaan-e-gulistaaN na ho sakaa

shukr-e-jafaa-e-yaar se fursat nahiN milii
dil waqf-e-shikwah-sanji-e-dauraaN na ho sakaa

halkii sii ek naqaab-e-tabassum paDii rahii

Sikandar Ali 'Wajd'
