Amir Agha Qazalbash's ghazal: Hamein yaqeeN thaa hamaara qusur niklega

Amir Agha Qazalbash had emerged as a fresh poetic voice and had soon become a leading poet of Delhi.

His poetry, style and looks endeared him to the audience who cheered his arrival at mushairas. Here is a ghazal, the third couplet of which is famous across the Urdu world and is an oft-quoted 'sher'.

Now read the ghazal:

मेरे जुनूँ का नतीजा ज़रूर निकलेगा
इसी सियाह समंदर से नूर निकलेगा

गिरा दिया है तो साहिल पे इंतज़ार न कर
अगर वोह डूब गया है तो दूर निकलेगा

उसी का शहर, वही मुद्दई, वही मुंसिफ
हमीं यकीन था, हमारा कुसूर निकलेगा

यकीन न आये तो एक बार पूछ कर देखो
जो हंस रहा है वोह ज़ख्मों से चूर निकलेगा

mere junuuN kaa natiijaa zaruur niklegaa
isii siyaah samandar se nuur niklegaa

giraa diyaa hai to saahil pe intezaar na kar
agar voh Duub gayaa hai to duur niklegaa

usii ka shahar, vahii muddaii, vahii munsif
hameen yaqiiN thaa, hamaaraa qusoor niklegaa

yaqiiN na aaye to ek baar puchh kar dekho
jo haNs rahaa hai voh zaKhmoN se chuur niklegaa
