A fresh poetic voice from Indian Punjab: Satpal Khayal's ghazal

Satpal Khayal belongs to the young generation of Urdu poets who have kept the tradition of Urdu poetry alive in Indian Punjab. Once a fertile land for Urdu literature, Punjab* is slowly losing its reputation of producing eminent poets.

After the generation of Krishen Adeeb and Bimal Krishan Ashk, one has hopes from poets like Khayal to enrich the world of Urdu and keep its flag aflutter in the region. Read his ghazal:

Read the Roman English transliteration:

hamaarii jaan ka dushman hamaare dil meN rahtaa hai

sukuuN miltaa hai hamko bas tumhaare shahar meN
yahiiN vo nuur saa chehraa kahiiN mahmil meN rahtaa hai

Satpaal Khayal

[*Due to lack of official patronage, Urdu script went out of fashion in Indian Punjab. The older generation still knows the language, however, young Sikhs and Hindus are not much familiar with Urdu rasmul khat. Still, a few Urdu papers including Hind Samachar are published and have a fair circulation.]
