Mirza Ghalib's famous Urdu ghazal: Dard minnat kash-e-dawaa na huaa...

Mirza Asadullah Khan who wrote under the pen name 'Ghalib' is not just a legendary Urdu poet but is considered as one of the greatest poets the world has ever known.

Ghalib' was born in 1797 in Agra. He attended the court of Mughal king Bahadur Shah Zafar. Ghalib died in 1869. Read his ghazal in three scripts:

Now read the same ghazal in Roman English transliteration:

dard minnat-kash-e-davaa na huaa
maiN na achchhaa huaa, buraa na huaa

ham kahaaN qismat aazmaane jaayeN
tuu hii jab Khanjar-aazmaa na huaa

kitne shiiriiN haiN tere lab ki, raqeeb
gaaliyaa.n khaa ke be maza na huaa

hai Khabar garm unke aane kii
aaj hii ghar meN boriyaa na huaa

jaan dii, dii huii usii kii thii
haq to yuuN hai ki, haq adaa nahiiN huaa

kuchh to paRhiye ki, log kahte haiN
"aaj Ghaalib ghazal-saraa na hua"

Mirza Ghalib
